Tyre and Sidon
Twin Phoenician port cities — proud trading powers in the Old Testament, sources of cedar for the temple, and places Jesus visited and praised for surprising faith.
Tyre and Sidon were great seafaring cities, supplying Solomon with cedar and craftsmen for the temple. The prophets often denounced their pride. Yet they were also lifted up as examples of faith — Jesus said Tyre and Sidon would have repented if they had seen the miracles done in Israel's cities.
Jesus traveled to that region, where a Syro-Phoenician woman's persistent faith won healing for her daughter. The gospel reached beyond Israel from the very beginning.
