Proverbs 19:21
“Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.”
Proverbs 19:21 teaches that people make many plans, but the LORD’s purpose is what ultimately stands — a call to plan humbly and to trust God’s sovereign, unshakable will.
The proverb contrasts the many plans of the human heart with the single, enduring purpose of God. It does not forbid planning; elsewhere Proverbs commends it. Rather, it sets our plans under God’s, reminding us that our schemes are provisional while His purpose is certain.
This is both humbling and comforting. Humbling, because our best-laid plans may be redirected; comforting, because history is not adrift — a wise and good God is steering it to His ends. The right response is to hold plans loosely and to submit them to the Lord (see James 4:15).
Does Proverbs 19:21 mean planning is pointless?
No. Scripture encourages wise planning; this verse simply subordinates our plans to God’s. We plan responsibly while trusting that His purpose, not ours, has the final word.
How should this verse change how I plan?
By planning humbly and prayerfully — making decisions with diligence but holding outcomes loosely, saying with James, “If the Lord wills, we will do this or that.”
