Greek word · Strong's G4710

σπουδή

spoudḗ · noun · “diligence, earnestness”

In a sentence

Spoudē means earnestness, eagerness, diligence — the energetic intent that pours itself into a task. Paul commends it in Christian living and giving.

Spoudē names the energetic concentration that throws itself into something. Mary goes to visit Elizabeth «with haste» (meta spoudēs). Paul says, «do not be slothful in zeal (spoudē), be fervent in spirit.»

The same word describes a willing eagerness in generous giving (2 Cor 8) and a careful concern to make one's calling and election sure (2 Pet 1:10). Christian life is not lazy.
