Greek word · Strong's G3686

ὄνομα

ónoma · noun · “name”

In a sentence

Onoma means name — and in Scripture a name often reveals character, authority, and identity. To act «in the name of Jesus» is to act under his authority.

Onoma is far more than a label in biblical thought. A name carries identity and authority. Acts says «there is no other onoma under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.»

Believers are baptized «in the name» of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They pray «in Jesus' name» — appealing to his authority and identity. The Bible takes names seriously.
