μέν
mén · word · “on the one hand, indeed”
Men is a delicate Greek particle — "on the one hand, indeed" — usually paired with de ("on the other hand, but"). It marks balanced contrast without rancor.
Men…de structures countless New Testament sentences, weighing one thing alongside another. Greek loves balance.
Often untranslated in English, men gives Greek prose its measured cadence — "the body indeed (men) is dead because of sin, but (de) the Spirit is life."
Definition: properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with G1161 (δέ) (this one, the former, etc.)
KJV usage: even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily
