Greek word · Strong's G190

ἀκολουθέω

akolouthéō · verb · “to follow”

In a sentence

Akoloutheō means to follow — used hundreds of times of disciples following Jesus. It is the constant verb of discipleship.

Akoloutheō literally means «walk in the same way.» Jesus calls disciples by saying «follow (akoloutheō) me.» Some leave nets, some leave money tables, some leave to count the cost.

Mark 8:34 makes it the heart of discipleship: «If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and akoloutheō me.» The Christian life is summed up in that verb.
