Nahum 1:7
“The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.”
Nahum 1:7 declares that the LORD is good and a stronghold in trouble, and that He knows — cares for and stands by — everyone who takes refuge in Him.
Nahum announces judgment on violent Nineveh, but pauses to describe God’s character toward His own people. In the same breath that warns the proud, the prophet comforts the trusting: the God who is a consuming fire to His enemies is a shelter to those who run to Him. His goodness and His justice are not in conflict.
“He knows those who take refuge in Him” means more than awareness; it is the knowing of committed care. In the day of distress, safety is not a place or a plan but a Person — a refuge who recognizes and holds onto His own.
How can God be both a judge and a refuge in Nahum?
The same goodness that opposes cruelty and evil (judgment on Nineveh) shelters those who trust Him. God’s justice and His mercy flow from one holy, loving character.
What does “a stronghold in the day of trouble” mean?
A stronghold is a fortified refuge. The verse locates security not in circumstances but in God Himself, who protects those who take shelter in Him.
