Paul has just told the Colossians to take off their old self with its sins (vv. 5–11). Now he tells them what to put on. The metaphor is clothing — the Christian life is a daily change of wardrobe.
The motive comes first: 'as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved.' We do not put on these virtues to become chosen, holy, or loved — we put them on because we already are. Identity drives behavior, not the other way around.
The five virtues form a portrait of Jesus himself.
