When God meets Moses at the burning bush and is asked his name, he answers “I AM WHO I AM,” and gives the name YHWH — built on the verb “to be.” It declares a God who simply is: eternal, self-existent, dependent on no one.

Out of reverence, this name is traditionally not pronounced; English Bibles print “the LORD” in small capitals to mark it. Wherever you see it, the text is pointing to the personal, covenant God who binds himself to his people by name.
