Simeon

A devout man of Jerusalem to whom the Spirit had revealed he would not die before seeing the Messiah — who, holding the infant Jesus, sang the Nunc Dimittis.

Simeon waited for the consolation of Israel. The Spirit led him to the temple the day Mary and Joseph brought Jesus.

Taking the baby in his arms, he sang: "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace… for my eyes have seen your salvation."

He went on to tell Mary that a sword would pierce her own soul — the cross casting its shadow already over the manger.
