Rome
Capital of the Roman Empire and the destination of Paul's longest journey — where he wrote four of his letters under house arrest and where tradition says he was martyred.
Rome was the political and cultural center of the empire. Paul wrote to its church before he had even visited, and Romans became his fullest exposition of the gospel.
He finally reached Rome as a prisoner. From two years of house arrest came Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Tradition holds that he was eventually executed there under Nero, leaving a letter (2 Timothy) of farewell.
