Areopagus

A hill in Athens, traditionally a place where philosophers debated — where Paul preached his famous sermon about the "unknown god" they worshiped in ignorance.

The Areopagus ("Mars Hill") overlooked the agora of Athens. Stoics and Epicureans brought Paul there to hear his "new teaching."

Paul began with an altar he had seen "to an unknown god" and proclaimed the true God who made all things — and the man, Jesus, raised from the dead.

Some mocked; some believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite.
