Mark 11:24
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
In Mark 11:24 Jesus teaches that prayer offered in real faith — trusting God to answer — is powerful, because it rests on the character and will of the God who hears.
Jesus speaks these words after cursing a fruitless fig tree, calling His disciples to “have faith in God.” Believing prayer is confident that God is able and good, not a technique for bending Him to our wishes. The faith commended is faith in a Person, not faith in the strength of our own wanting.
This verse is balanced by the rest of Scripture: John says we have confidence when we ask “according to His will” (1 John 5:14), and Jesus Himself prayed “not My will, but Yours.” So the promise is not a blank check for any desire, but assurance that prayers aligned with God’s purposes are truly heard and answered.
Does Mark 11:24 guarantee I’ll get whatever I ask for?
It assures that believing prayer is heard, but Scripture qualifies “whatever” with God’s will (1 John 5:14) and God’s glory. Faith trusts His wisdom even when the answer is “no” or “wait.”
What is “believing” prayer?
Trusting that God is able and willing to do what is good, and resting in His character — not working up a feeling of certainty about a specific outcome.
